I was present at today's first of many possible protests/ rallies involving the Queensland Fire fighters with the government over wage rates.
With their State Secretary Mr Mark Walker authorising the Union presence outside the Wooloongabba Cricket Ground waiting to confront Premier Peter Beattie, Queensland Firefighters are currently campaigning for fair and equitable rates of pay. The Queensland Government tells us that the QFRS is a World Class Service and boasts that they have the highest level of training in the country.
Yet the Queensland Firefighters ask why then are they paid amongst the lowest wage rates of Australian Firefighters?
In recent years firefighters have taken on additional roles including:
* High Angle Rescue
* Trench Rescue
* Swift Water Rescue
* Urban Search & Rescue and confined Space Rescue
* Increased building safety inspections (after the Childers tragedy)
* Road Awareness and Accident Prevention program for year 12 students (to help reduce our teenage road toll)
* Fire Safety education for ALL year 1 students
* Increased training for terrorism events.
In 1998 Queensland Firefighters were the second highest paid in the country.
Today under the Beattie Labour government they are the second lowest paid in the nation - yet they are also the MOST HIGHLY trained firefighters in Australia.
All they want is a FAIR GO.
Remember - Firefighters are our last line of Defence. They are the ones running in when everyone else is running out.
