20th July 1955 - Mt Gravatt Fire station was opened. 50 years later on the 23rd July 2005 the station had its 50th Anniversary.

During its 50 years this station and its many crews have witnessed countless incidents such as, the Bill William's furniture factory fire on the corner of Gowrie St & Logan Rd, on 11th December 1967; the Wilkinson's Soft Boards fire, but none as distressing as the death of Station Officer Steele who collapsed and died in 1959 at a fire in Mt Gravatt.

Dignitaries and official invited guests included the QFRS Commissioner Lee Johnson, Assistant Comissioner Iaine MacKenzie, The Honourable Judy Spence MP,Minister for Police and Corrective Services, QFRS Area Directors, Members of the Retired Firefighters Association including past crew members of 17 station.

Within this distinguished bunch was 91year old Ralph Herron, who was not only a Sub Station officer of the original crew at 17stn serving for 33 years, but was also a survivor of the Siege of Tobruk during World War 2.

Commissioner Lee Johnson cut the 50th Anniversary celebratory cake and discussed the siting of the NEW Wishart Fire & Rescue Station.
Salvation Army Chaplin Les Shaw then blessed the station its current and past members, with the Commissioner closing and giving a vote of thanks.

The commencement of the "Open Day" activities included -

*Kitchen Fire demonstration
*Information display of the new Wishart Fire & Rescue station
*517 Alpha (Pump) and Kilo (Emergency Tender)on display

with a display of the new 42metre Bronto Ladder Platform (which as yet is still uncommissioned) and a VERY RARE photo opportunity of the QFRS Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner going up in Australia's Largest Ladder Platform.

As always many thanks to "D" shift boys, and Station Officer Daw for a memorable Anniversary celebration.
