A group of Queensland firefighters called "Fire & Surf Boardriders" who in their spare time/time off, and who have been together as a small surf group for 7 years,staged their "Inaugural 911 Memorial Surf" in 2003.
This year they continued that tradition.
Now this is no ordinary surf competition,because the competitors were there to commemorate and pay tribute to those who tragically lost their lives,and those who selflessly lent their aid in the World Trade Centre disaster, a minutes silence was observed at 10am.
Although it has been 4 years since the tragedy,they still remember and honour their fallen brothers.
Troy (one of the co-ordinators) said last year that they felt this day did make a difference and they will continue to hold this event as a mark of respect. The "A" shift boys from Surfers Paradise made an appearance with 3 appliances in attendance.
Unfortunately unlike last year - it was an overcast spring day - there was hardly any surf, but still the boys competed & remembered. And unfortunately there was one minor little injury, when one surfer ended up with 3 stitches above his left eye after hitting the nose of his own board!
A huge wooden trophy made and donated by Graham Weir of Timindo Coconut Timber is reministant of the World Trade towers with a bronze surfer in between a personal touch of the Fire & Surf Boardriders.
I was again made welcomed as an unoffical invited guest and today, like the previous years the event was a huge success and presentations will take part later tonite.
My thanks to Troy and Vic for allowing me to be apart of this memorial yet again, and to all the guys for making me feel like a part of the "extended" family - and I look forward to next year! |
