A pilot died and five people who tried in vain to rescue him were treated for minor burns and cuts after a light plane crash in Brisbane this morning.
The male pilot was the only occupant of the plane, which crashed in waist-deep water in a gully at Coopers Plains around 11am.
The land, bounded by Orange Grove Road, Kessels Rd and Middle Street, is adjacent to Queensland's only forensic facility, the John Tonge Centre.
QAS said crews had treated five people who attempted to rescue the pilot from the gully.
They have ended up with some minor fuel burns to the legs and arms due to hopping into the water mixed with aviation fuel. The injured people were construction workers and other members of the public who had witnessed the crash.
None of the patients had required hospital treatment.
Police believe the pilot was on approach to nearby Archerfield Airport when the plane crashed.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
There had been a storm in Brisbane around the time of the crash.
